Business roles are the largest group of private-sector jobs in Somalia and Somaliland: sales agents and shop supervisors at telecoms, tellers and customer service officers at banks and remittance companies, merchant officers at mobile money firms, admin, HR and operations staff at trading companies and hotels. The panel is usually the branch or department manager, someone from HR and sometimes a regional manager. They want someone who brings results and can be trusted with customers, money and records.
- Results with numbers. Sales per month, new customers or merchants, retention, complaints closed, average response time. A claim without a number scores as if nothing happened.
- Customers and trust. Can you calm an angry customer, explain a fee honestly and keep a promise? In a small market, one bad experience travels through WhatsApp in a day.
- Working with targets. Do you know your target, track it weekly and change your approach when you are behind, instead of waiting for the month to end?
- Honesty with money and records. Cash, floats, stock, staff files: they want to hear that you follow the procedure even when nobody is watching.
The typical process has two or three parts. A panel of three to five with a scoring sheet; a role-play where one panellist acts as a customer on the phone or at the counter for five minutes; and a short practical task: an Excel sheet to total and sort, a customer reply to write in English, or a two-minute pitch of a product you are shown on the spot. For HR and admin posts the task is often a letter or a filing exercise. Ask HR which parts to expect when you confirm.
- 1How to talk about a target you missed. First, give the target and the real result: “My target was 40 new merchants a month; I signed 28.” Never round up.
- 2Name one cause you controlled and one you did not, briefly: a new competitor cut its fees, and I spent too long on small shops that were never going to sign.
- 3Say what you changed: I focused on pharmacies and wholesalers, and made two visits before a sign-up instead of five.
- 4Close with the next number: the following quarter I averaged 45 a month.
