Walk us through a project from BoQ to handover

The panel asks this to see whether you understand the whole project cycle and where you really were in it. Many candidates say “we” for everything, so the panel cannot tell if they led the design or carried the tape. Say “I” for what you did and “we” for what the team did. Plan for two to three minutes, in the six stages below, and expect follow-up questions on any detail you mention.

1. 1One sentence: what, where, for whom, size, cost, dates, and your role. “A six-classroom block in Baidoa for an education NGO, 95,000 USD, 2024 to 2025, site engineer.”
2. 2Design and BoQ: the survey, the drawings, the quantities, market rates and contingency. Say how close the estimate came to the final cost.
3. 3Procurement: tender or three quotations, the evaluation committee, the contract signed.
4. 4Mobilisation and supervision: site setup, inspections and tests at each stage, the site diary, payment certificates from measured work, variations approved in writing.
5. 5Commissioning: pressure test, pump test, electrical test; the snag list and the days it took to close it.
6. 6Handover: as-built drawings, the operation and maintenance manual, training for the water committee or the school, the defects liability period and the final certificate.

If you are a fresh graduate, use your final-year project or an internship and say your role honestly: “I assisted the site engineer with the daily diary and the concrete cube samples.” That answer scores better than a borrowed project. For a utility or a municipality, add the permits, the road crossings and the community's written consent for land, because those are the stages that delay their projects most.
